Introducing the Breakaway Academy

The Breakaway Academy is a grassroots initiative created to provide a structured pathway for future gamers and children interested in building a strong IT skillset. Utilising the coaching and performance development expertise of the Breakers, the Academy will operate a year round age-tailored curriculum aimed at New Zealand’s next generation of competitors.
As well as some of the more obvious skills such as hand-eye co-ordination and general IT skills, Esports encourages teamwork, leadership, communication, strategy and decision making. The Breakaway Academy aims to enhance those learnings, as well as reinforcing awareness of the importance of balance, including nutrition, physical activity, mental health and fair play.

Why esports?

The same skillset a team needs to succeed in more traditional sports are not only encouraged but required in esports. Teams need to communicate, work together, and think strategically to be victorious.
Research has suggested that students who compete in systematic esports competition have exponential positive education outcomes. Esports is a meaningful way to engage the next generation of New Zealanders, and we want to make sure it’s done in the best way possible.
To give parents and students a taste of what to expect from the Breakaway Academy in term four, we are running an introductory holiday camp in October consisting of:
  • Age specified learning groups (8 years and up)
  • Lessons centered around esports and sports
  • Half day sessions tailored to fit your holiday plans
We have one week of camps available, running from Monday 8th October until Thursday 11th October. We will also be hosting Fortnite Friday on the 12th of October, where kids can learn from a specialist Fortnite coach and take on challenges with a chance of some spot prizes!
We only have 40 spots available for the upcoming school holiday period, so to register your child please visit the form below:
